Quotation marks and adjacent punctuation
The quotation mark is a pair of symbols, and the text in question must be enclosed within. When a quote is “opened” to mark the start of direct speech, title, or irony, it must be closed with the same punctuation (i.e., “She walked her dog today,” not “She walked her dog today,’ or “She walked her dog today). A quotation is a section of the text/speech from the source you are using. For example, “It was a dark and stormy night.” A citation is the credit you give to the author/creator of that source, as you are using their work in your own.
